11 streets named after Russian figures renamed in Uzhgorod
MOSCOW, January 31 – RIA Novosti. Eleven streets named after Russian composers, generals and painters have been renamed Uzhgorod in Ukraine, the Uzhgorod City Council reported.
“The deputies voted for the renaming of 11 streets in Uzhgorod today at a session of the city council,” the Uzhgorod city council said in a message on the social network Facebook*.
In particular, according to the City Council, Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin Street became the street of Carpathian Ukraine, composer Mikhail Glinka Street was renamed in honor of the Ukrainian linguist Lubomir Beley, the street of Russian painter Vasily Vereshchagin became Volonterov Street, the street of Russian General Pyotr Bagration was renamed in honor of the artist Georgy Narbut, composer Alexander Borodin street became a street named after the Ukrainian ethnographer Pavel Chubinsky.
According to the authorities of Uzhgorod, public hearings on the renaming of three streets in Uzhgorod are scheduled for February 2.
The dismantling of monuments related to Soviet history, as well as the renaming of streets, began in Ukraine in 2015, when a law on decommunization was passed. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have begun to fight not only with Soviet history, but with everything connected with Russia.
