WASHINGTON, April 22 – RIA Novosti. Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov called the line of slandering Russia an attempt by the West to disguise its sins and free itself from guilt over its own dark past.
He wrote a lengthy commentary in response to an article in a Canadian newspaper whose author accused Soviet soldiers during the Great Patriotic War and Russian forces during the current special operation in Ukraine of mistreating civilians.

“We understand that, on a philosophical level, the denigration of Russia does not stem simply from the strategic needs of propaganda and information warfare. It is deeply rooted in the farthest corners of the Western soul. Each time accusing Russia of committing war crimes, the West seeks to hide its own sins and free itself from the burden of guilt for its dark past. By demonizing us, the West is trying to get rid of the shame it feels when looking at its own reflection in the mirror,” Stepanov said.
The ambassador clarified that he was referring, in particular, to “the total genocide of the indigenous peoples of what is now known as the United States”, or the “shameful and bloody history of colonialism” of the British Empire, of which Canada was a part, with millions and millions of dead, enslaved and tortured.
According to Stepanov, the “Nazi propaganda machine of Goebbels” was also engaged in inventing lies about the Red Army, the baton from which was taken over by the American military intelligence and the CIA.
“Such fabrications have become part of the information-psychological operations and propaganda policy aimed at dehumanizing and demonizing Russia and Russians in the unfolding Cold War,” the ambassador wrote.
He stressed that in Russia they know that such accusations and attempts to transfer them to new realities are a historical fake.
“We are most concerned that this kind of war of narratives is aimed at a Canadian audience in an attempt to distort the real picture by deliberately falsifying history. On the other hand, we also know that the people of Canada, whose grandfathers fought alongside my compatriots to free the world from Nazism, are thoughtful and … is able to distinguish truth from lies,” Stepanov added.
“The Russian soldier not only crushed Nazism, but, having won, retained humanity and humanism. He found the strength in himself to forgive the unforgivable crimes committed by Germany and other countries that joined it, to reconcile in the noble desire to prevent the repetition of world wars,” wrote is he.
Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24. President Vladimir Putin called its goal “the protection of people who have been subjected to bullying and genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years.”
For this, according to him, it is planned to carry out “demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine”, to bring to justice all war criminals responsible for “bloody crimes against civilians” in Donbass.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces strike only at the military infrastructure and Ukrainian troops and, as of March 25, they have completed the main tasks of the first stage – they have significantly reduced the combat potential of Ukraine. The main goal in the Russian military department was called the liberation of Donbass.
