Formula 1 championship leader Charles Leclerc of the Ferrari team overcame the pressure after one round to claim his 10th pole position at next Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

His main rival and reigning champion Max Verstappen, who looked set to take first place with Red Bull, had to settle for second after a last-minute problem ruined his final effort.

Spaniard Carlos Sainz, also for Ferrari, secured third place on Sunday’s grid, with George Russell fourth for a resurrected Mercedes team.

Russell’s teammate and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton qualified sixth behind Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

“It was a very, very difficult session. […]because I made a mistake in the opening and obviously I only did one lap”, said Leclerc after his fourth pole position in six races and the second in a row.
