The Rio de Janeiro government started today (18) to the renovation works of the Teleférico do Alemão, in Rio de Janeiro. Cable air transport is located in the complex of communities of the same name, in the north of the capital. With resources from the concession of sanitation services, this phase of the interventions is budgeted at R$ 16.9 million.

The work is expected to be completed by December. The cable car has a total length of 3.5 kilometers, has 152 gondolas and benefits 10,000 residents of the communities of Bonsucesso, Adeus, Baiana, Alemão, Itararé and Palmeiras. The cable car had been stopped since 2016.

In November last year, the government closed an agreement with the company Poma for the reactivation of the cable car. The French company was responsible for installing the cable car in the community in the north of the city. Representatives of the multinational, which holds the exclusivity of the electromechanical transport system, inspected the cable car in September 2021 and prepared a technical damage report.

The six cable car stations will receive improvements such as the recovery of hydraulic and sanitary installations, electrical, lighting and control systems, mechanical installations, air conditioning, roofing, frames and hardware, coatings and finishes.

The Secretary of Infrastructure and Works, Max Lemos, said that the work will be important for the community, returning a transport system that made it possible to connect the first and last stations in just 15 minutes, when before it took more than an hour. “And it’s not just the issue of transport, but the return of services that were installed at the stations and in the surroundings”, he pointed out.

Next phase

In the next phase, R$ 150 million will be invested, with the recovery and updating of the cable car equipment. “The system has changed to ensure more security for users. After these steps, the Transport Department will launch a tender to operate the Alemão Cable Car”, announced the state governor.

The Alemão cable car was inaugurated in 2011 and stopped working in 2016. Several services operated at its stations, such as family clinics and libraries, among others.
