Deaths from torrential rains in southern China reach 13

The death toll has risen to 13 as a result of the torrential rains that affected southern China. There are three people missing, reported today (28) the Chinese state press.

Five victims were found inside a collapsed industrial building and three in a collapsed residential building on Friday, the official Xinhua news agency added, citing the Wuping region information office.

Heavy rain began late Thursday in Wuping, which is about 210 kilometers (km) from the coastal city of Xiamen in Fujian province.

Videos posted on social media show some streets flooded with muddy water, and others where the pavement was partially washed away.

The storm damaged crops, caused power cuts and destroyed 39 homes in Wuping, state media said. More than 1,600 people were evacuated from their homes.

Five more people died and three are missing in Yunnan province, about 1,200 km away in southwest China, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said.

The storm damaged roads, bridges and telecommunications and energy facilities in the Qiubei region of Yunnan, which is 130 km from the border with Vietnam.
